The average price per kwh at the moment is between 9 to 11pence.
Typically most of the energy you use will be from November to March. This will peak with January and February being the coldest.
December can be fairly cold – Dec 2009 was a particularly cold month.
So if you have a direct debit / standing order set up you will overpay in the summer to save up money for the winter when the bills will be higher. This will help you cover the costs over 12 months.
If your energy supplier advises your standing order is going up it could be because you have not paid enough to cover past consumption.
The best way to combat this is to always keep your energy supplier up-to-date with actual readings from your meter.
For example a modern three bed well insulated property probably pays a combined energy bill of Gas £150 per month + Electric £50 per month = £2400 p.a.
Don’t Forget:
If your home is poorly insulated and / or lacks double glazing then your consumption will be higher than a home of the same size that does have these features.
The winter months or particularly bad periods of weather will increase consumption.
Keeping doors to rooms closed helps to lock in heat and your radiators don’t have to work as hard.
Make sure you have the right size heater for each room so that it can run as economically as possible.
If you have been running heating on gas and you change to electricity then your electricity bill is going to increase but you should see a reduction in your gas bill.
